60 imagesInsects creep out many people, that’s true. But for macro photographers, there might not be a better subject. Creepy as they may be, insects are also very photogenic if you get close enough. They offer spectacular colours and structures. Trying out insect photography will be like discovering a whole new world. Not to mention how easy it is to find them in nearly all environments. In the woods, fields, at a lake, at a swamp, in our homes, in the garden, at streams, at ponds, the list can go on forever. You just have to watch closely. For example, dead trees can be full of life. You can find different types of beetles and various other insects hidden among the leaves. The most difficult part is to spot the tiny little animals and to get them in focus.

10 imagesLow-key photography is a terrific challenge for both the novice and the experienced. It is a very simple technique that brings instant drama to an image but could take a lifetime to master. Like most other forms of photography, it is all about illumination and elimination. A low-key image is one that contains predominantly dark tones and colors. Like high key images, low-key photography conveys atmosphere and mood. But where a high-key image feels airy and light, a low-key is usually dramatic and full of mystery. And where high-key lighting over-lights the subject to reduce contrast, low-key lighting creates striking contrasts through reduced lighting. Shadows are now the primary element of the composition.

15 imagesAbstract Macro Photography refers to an image that has no obvious connection to the real world of solid, easily recognised objects. Such images exploit the use of patterns and colours. They grab the eye and invite the viewer to explore the image for its own sake. This genre of photography is about representing a subject in a non-literal way. The focus of abstract photography is more about colour, shape, and texture as opposed to the literal representation of the subject. Abstract macro photography, takes this to the next level by enabling you to get even closer to your subject, and therefore produces a result that prompts the “what is that” question. The same rules of photography composition apply; you can use the rule of thirds, negative space, curves, and lines to draw the viewer into the image. Water and oil do not mix because they have properties that make them repel and attract each other at the same time. When photographed together, they can create unique abstract and surreal painterly images. Photography is an art of observation. It is about finding something interesting in an ordinary place. I have found that it has little to do with the things you see and everything to do with the way that you see them. To quote myself, “The creative eye enables one to see what is invisible to others”................... Chris Connolly

50 imagesAll photographers know that the act of taking a photograph is as simple as pressing a button, be it on a digital camera, film camera, phone, tablet or in this case, a ‘virtual camera’. The end result is always the same: a photograph. Enter the virtual world of online gaming. GTA 5 is a PlayStation game that cost $265 Million to develop and market, making it the most expensive video game ever produced. GTA 5 soared beyond the $1 billion mark in the first 3 days after it’s launch, eventually making over $6 billion & selling over 145 million copies worldwide. The game's open world setting is modeled on Los Angeles (called Los Santos) and real-life neighbourhoods like downtown Los Angeles, Koreatown, South Central, Venice Beach and Beverly Hills. Other iconic sites are the Hollywood Bowl, Santa Monica Pier, Venice Beach, the legendary Whisky A Go Go club and the Playboy Mansion etc. Weather and lighting are fundamental aspects throughout the game as they play a crucial role in portraying reality. The light is also very realistic, especial in the morning and evening. It is so good that I have taken hundreds of screen grabs and processed them via Photoshop. I have converted them into B&W images, added some film grain, vignettes and a few other effects to make them look like old analog film photos. The results were similar to the ‘film noir’ effect. Moody, dark and dramatic: the term ‘film noir’ may instantly conjure cinematic scenarios in your mind of hard-boiled detectives and brassy women that drag trouble behind them like tattered coats. Hollywood thriller or crime movies that were popular in the 1940s and 1950s such as The Big Sleep (Humphrey Bogart), Psycho (Alfred Hitchcock) and Citizen Kane (Orson Welles) were typically ‘film noir’. Photographs are first visualized in the mind’s eye and this method just proves that you don’t need an expensive camera or indeed a camera at all to produce an image. All the same photography rules apply i.e. subject matter, composition, lighting, shapes, patterns, drama and texture etc. This new genre of ‘in-game’ or ‘screenshot’ photography could actually be used as a tool for teaching the art of photography to younger students because one would not get bogged down with the mathematics of camera settings”....... “Viva Los Santos”.
